The Great Big Animal Poem

National Poetry Day is celebrated on Thursday 4th October 2018. It is a chance for people to share and read poems and become inspired to write their own.

Poetry is an amazing medium for expressing creativity: you can play around with words, rhythm and structure to create something fantastic!

To celebrate, we want to create ‘The Great Big Animal Poem’ including work from our poets all over the world. We have started off the poem with our own rhyming couplet:

We want as many students around the world to write a rhyming couplet about their own favourite animal that they have created. It is very easy for your students to take part in this, just follow these steps:

  1. Send the Great Big Poem Lesson to your students. This video will show you how to send lessons.
  2. They complete it by writing a rhyming couplet and drawing a picture to illustrate it.
  3. Download the lesson results into a spreadsheet. This video will show you how to download lesson results.
  4. Email the spreadsheet to emma@nightzookeeper.com before the end of October 2018.

All of the rhyming couplets that we receive can be added to our poem and published at the end of October 2018.

We can’t wait to read your rhymes and create our amazing poem!

How you can help your child with dysgraphia or dyslexia to enjoy writing.

Dyslexia and dysgraphia are common learning difficulties experienced by children. It can be incredibly tough to find a program that not only helps encourage a child to love creative writing who struggles with either of these difficulties, but also one that allows them to actually flourish as creative writers! So, the main question is how can we help someone with dysgraphia or dyslexia with their writing so that they can grow to love it? There are plenty of online learning games and options for dyslexia and dysgraphia that can help your child.

In partnership with IMM’s Care to Create and printed.com, we set out a very special Star Writing Challenge.

For this Star Writing Challenge, we asked our young writers to create a short rhyming poem about staying positive and spreading love and hope. We also wanted them to create a piece of artwork relating to positivity and spreading love and hope. The winners of this challenge had the chance to have their poems and drawings featured across different hospitals and care homes to help make Key Workers’ and patients’ lives happier.
